Auxiliary Electric Heat Strips

 ◦   Geothermal design software intelligent Auxiliary electric heat can be located inside the heat pump unit or in the duct of a geothermal heat pumps (Ground Source Heat Pumps), and is often referred to as a third stage. Buildings are designed based on historical data provided by ASHRAE as building design conditions for a particular climate location, but for a few hour of the year the building will need some additional heating for comfort that exceeds the ASHRAE max load conditions. Rather than over size the duct work and install the next larger size heat pump equipment for only a few hour a year of operation it is much more economical to install auxiliary electric heat in the unit to provide extra heat when the heat pump equipment reaches maximum capacity. In some cases the auxiliary will only operate 10 hours per year. Installing an over sized heat pump will also increase the size of the in-ground circulating pump capacity that will increase the ground loop cost that will never be recouped.

 ◦   GEO®Hourly geothermal design software simulates Auxiliary electric heat in every zone and calculates the operating cost for both the heat pump operation along with the auxiliary cost. When the auxiliary heat cost become grater than about 8 % of the total heating operating cost than it is best to go ahead and increase the zone heat pump equipment to the next larger size.
